French-flagged pirates attacked a Portuguese galleon that was transporting gold from Guinea to Portugal. The new documentary information about Vasco da Gama’s life appeared only in 1492. Abraham Zacuto, the boys’ mentor, appreciated his students’ intellect and talents. In 1480, Vasco and his brother joined the Order of Santiago and studied mathematics, astronomy, and navigation. In the 15th century, bastard boys were to take monastic vows so that they would receive an adequate education. The father tried to compensate for it with money and provided his son with everything he wanted. Young Vasco knew he would have to make his life on his own. The father, Estêvão da Gama, felt guilty – the parents were not married when their son was born, and the baby was nothing but a bastard without the inheritance rights. Da Gama came from noble blood, and his family was pretty wealthy. The boy spent his childhood in Sines located on the sea coast. Vasco was born between 1460-1469 there is no clear information. The famous explorer’s life was not all about discoveries, though: piracy and cynic murders were also present.

With his voyage, the Portuguese overseas empire was born. He was greeted as a hero and richly rewarded by the king. After a long and harrowing return trip - which included the death of his brother - da Gama reached Portugal in September of 1499, more than two years after having set out. Still, da Gama was able to leave India with some spices. The goods Manuel had sent as gifts were of poor value, infuriating Calicut’s ruler. Once he reached Calicut, da Gama’s reception was not very warm. The long voyage also took a serious toll of the crew around two-thirds died during the voyage, most of disease. The trip across the southern Atlantic left the ships a worrying three months without sight of land, and the expedition met hostile natives in southern Africa - who gave da Gama an arrow wound - and Muslims in eastern Africa. He carried with him priests to see to the crews’ souls, interpreters to help communicate with Bantu and Arabic speakers, and a store of gifts the king intended for him to use to attract Indian rulers to trade.
